contribute to the tribute
We are currently trying to reach all of Hal's friends, fellow alumni students at NMU and IMD (formerly IMEDE), and former and current students.
A little history leading up to the tribute
Every year, Hal and his fraternity brothers hold a golf outing. In 2008, that golf outing was in Wisconsin. Prior to it, Hal and Arlene contacted several NMU alumni who were former students of Hal's, many of whom participated in the International Student Study Abroad program. It was a wonderful time, and many stories were shared about the many wonderful adventures of the groups.
Mark Bonetti planted the seed when he made a comment to Jodi Golisek that he fashioned his life after the great Hal Dorf. As the stories were told that night, the vision evolved, and the idea was born to hold a tribute to Hal for the many doors he opened for us to a very vast world.
As a handful of students freverously exchanged e-mail's and phone calls to talk about the tribute, it soon became apparent that these few students were not the only ones that wanted to pay honor to Hal. The real delimnna was how to tap into a book of more 3,000 close friends, a book that Hal open nearly daily. Needles to say, we'd have to get the book, or find a person who knew most of the people in it.
We told Hal that we wanted to have a get-together during homecoming weekend at NMU - just a small affair - maybe 20 or so of his students, and Hal readily opened his address book and began to share names, excited to think he might get to see a few of his former students. But we knew better, and we knew the one name we had to have out of that book: Ed Havlik.
Ed is a long-time friend of Hal and Arlene's, a fraternity brother of Hal's, and privy to the many projects we embarked upon involving friends of Hal's from around the world. He has been very instumental in helping us pull this tribute together.
The Northern Michigan University Alumni Association is at the backbone of this event. Through the Alum Association, we have secured space in the Great Lakes Room.
Our special thanks to all of you for helping to put this tribute together.
